paper or plastic ? - 2006/08/10 17:34 Which is better paper or plastic, for subwoofer boxes that is. Paper or MDF(med density fiberboard), comes in 4 grades. Grade 4 being the least and grade 1 being the hardest and most compact, like a 3/4 thick piece of paper. Grade 2 is what most people make boxes with. MDF is going to be cheaper, easy to work with and clean up from. It also has a good sound damping quality. MDF 3/4 " thick will work on most boxes but you might need to go up to 1 1/2" for some boxes which is hard to find. Plastic (fiberglass) is stronger, more expensive, and harder to use. It only takes a thickness of about 75% of wood to equal its hardness. Fiberglass can be custom molded into places wood just wouldn't go. As far as the sound goes wood and fiberglass are both good the important thing is to build a box that won't flex and is airtight.
