capacitors - 2007/03/20 15:29
There are two types of capacitors. The non-polar are used for crossover networks, they block certain frequencies. The ones were gonna talk about are the polar caps. These are used to keep a steady flow of electricity to your amps. You'll find them on every piece of electronic gear from sonar and radar systems to car amps. Caps store and release power very quickly, faster than a battery can. The battery is good for storing alot of energy but it's internal resistance makes it to slow for most electronics. The cap bridges this gap by being able to charge and discharge quickly. This helps to keep a constant 12-14 volts flowing to your amplifier. When current dips to low it clips the amp, because your demanding more power than it can reproduce keeping in mind all an amp does is convert power. No power in ,no power out. This damages both the amp and the speakers sending 12 volt DC pulses to your speakers. Capacitors come in many sizes. You should have 1 farad of capacidence for every 1000 watts of power, but to much is always a good thing with caps.
