bass = space - 2006/12/27 17:17 Why does the truck wedge with the 15" sound like crap? Because the bass didn't have enough space. When a speaker moves it puts out a bass wave from the front and an identical but opposite wave from the rear. So you want the front wave but not the back one because if they come together they will cancel each other out. You do this buy putting it in a box or baffle. It not only has to be in an enclosure it has to be in the right enclosure for that sub. In a baffle or free air the speaker has to have a stiff enough suspension to fully control the speaker. Enclosures are better because they give the speaker just enough resistance to assist the suspension. When the speaker goes out vacuum inside the box helps to pull it back. When the speaker goes in internal pressure pushes it back out. This makes sealed boxes the most accurate. In a ported box you take away some of the control of the box but add part of the reinverted rear wave back to the front wave for a rise at whatever freq you tuned it to.
